BANNING AND ELIMINATING NUCLEAR WEAPONS: A PLANETARY HEALTH IMPERATIVE “Nuclear disarmament is the most urgent humanitarian necessity of our time”. These often-quoted words belong to Dr. Tilman Ruff, founding Chair of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons [ICAN], which was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for “…its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treatybased prohibition of such weapons”. A multiply-awarded physician and highly regarded human rights advocate, Dr. Ruff will be presenting his findings at a free public talk in Lecture Theatre S169, Patient Care Center, Royal Jubi lee Hospital, 1952 Bay St. He will highlight the documented links between military activities and nuclear weapons tests, as well as proven links to ciguatera fish poisoning in the Pacific. Dr. Ruff, Associate Professor in the University of Melbourne’s Nossal Institute for Global Health – which he helped establish – has long studied, taught, and written of the health and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons testing and the absolute necessity of nuclear weapons abolition. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his “…service to the promotion of peace as an advocate for the abolition of nuclear war…” in 2012, the same year he became Co- President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War [IPPNW]. IPPNW was also awarded the Nobel in 1985. 2 In 2016, Ruff was part of the UN Working Group on nuclear disarmament which recommended the creation of a new legal instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons and ultimately eliminate them. He also made history in March, June and July of 2017 as the leader of the IPPNW delegation to the UN conference in New York that culminated in the adoption of a UN treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons, signed by 122 countries.
